Open-plan kitchens are ever more popular.  They encourage sociability, are convenient and space-saving. At Kitchenality, many clients say that they are renovating the house by extending the kitchen or knocking through two previously small rooms to create an open plan kitchen, dining and living area. It’s the modern way of life.  However, it can be an overwhelming project to choose the right open-plan kitchen layout and is tricky to plan the space efficiently. Therefore, to best enhance natural light but also create a cosy, private space, employment of a trusted kitchen designer is invaluable.

The Kitchenality team have many years of kitchen design experience and offer a free consultation. Kitchenality understand how essential it is to have a functional, interactive layout. A chat with the designer crystallises ideas and helps clients reach the perfect solution.

Open-Plan Kitchens

First and foremost, consider whether, for you, it is more important to look out into the garden from the working kitchen area, the dining table or the seating area?

Dine with a View

If your dining table is in constant use by family and you entertain frequently, it makes sense to position the table near the patio doors.  Therefore, guests have a sense of the garden.  Patio doors can be left open on balmy evenings to enjoy the fragrance of flowers and trees.

Lounge in the Light

You may prefer to lounge on the sofa and admire the fruits of your garden as they change with the seasons. If this is the case, it would make sense to create a living area next to the patio doors and move the kitchen and dining areas further into the internal space. Be mindful of the TV position to avoid glare.

Sunshine Cook

If cooking takes priority and the cook wants to enjoy the natural light the best layout would be for the kitchen to be next to the patio doors.  If you have a herb garden or grow fruit and vegetables, it gives the cook easy access to home grown produce.  This layout enables a cosy space to be created, within the internal area, for lounging.
